Herrings with blackcurrants

From the first look the combination sounds completely absurd, but if to think we do combine meat and berries, so why not herrings? The original recipe calls for blueberries, but I think the blackcurrants go much better.

Cельдь с черной смородиной

  • 250 g fillet low-salt herrings
  • 150- 200 g сreme-fraiche (sour-cream)
  • 2 spring onions
  • 1/4 small sweet red onion
  • 100 ml chopped dill
  • 1-2 tsp liquid honey
  • 150 - 200 ml frozen blackcurrants
  • Black pepper
  • Chop finely the onions
  • In a bowl combine the creme-fraiche, black pepper, onions and dill, add in the blackcurrants and stir gently
  • Cut the fish into the small bite-size portions add to the cream blend and leave in the fridge for 12 hours
  • Stir again and transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with the herbs
  • Serve with the black bread or boiled potatoes

For the first time I made it with the blueberries and did not liked it that much, something was missing in the flavour. Then I tried with blackcurrant and it was a perfect match. For a spicier version you can add a bit of horseradish. Adjust the amount of honey depending on your taste.
